Brigade History..
The Sunbury Fire Brigade has been a part of the Sunbury community since 1911. Since the brigade was formed it has been a fully volunteer brigade and became an integrated brigade on December 3 2007. What this means for the community of Sunbury and the Sunbury Fire Brigade is that there will always be 2 full time paid fire fighters on station 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year and these fire fighters are there to support the volunteers.
When the brigade was formed the first station which is the picture on the left was on what is now the Sunbury Square shopping centre. Down the track the brigade built a new station which was directly across the road from the original site next to the Telstra exchange. That station was in operation until 2002 when the brigade moved to it's current location on the corner of Gap Road & Elizabeth Drive and then opened it's satellite station in Jackson Street opposite the Ball Court Hotel.
The station located at Gap Road & Elizabeth Drive is the main station where all of the main functions of the brigade operate from. All of the training of brigade members is held at this location as well as all meetings for the brigade. This station also houses 5 of the brigades 7 vehicles. The vehicles that are housed at the Gap Road Station are the brigades pumper, tanker 1, tanker 2, breathing apparatus support and one of the brigades 4WD's. The remaining vehicles are the pumper-tanker and the second brigade 4WD which are housed at the Jackson Street station.
All of these appliances can be viewed in detail in the appliances section.
The new station on Gap Road was built in 2002 and was modified in 2007 to accomodate the full time staff
members that will begin in December 2007. A lot of the changes that have been made to the station
also benefit the volunteers as they will have access to some of those new areas.
Some of the changes to the station are as follows.
- New sleeping accomodation for the
firefighters on night shift.
- Improved workshop and engine bay for breathing apparatus
support vehicle.
- New room to house turnout gear for all members.
- New offices that will allow both the staff
and volunteers to perform their tasks
- Additional training/meeting room.
- New
gymnasium that both volunteers and staff can utilise to keep up their fitness.
The brigade conducts it's weekly maintenance at both stations every Sunday morning from 9am til 12pm. If you would like to have a look at the stations or the vehicles please feel free to drop in.
